Orb of Destruction

It was a relic of another time, plundered from an ancient tomb, wrought by forgotten arts, inscribed with cryptic runes.

{A rare ruiner warning for a Things entry, knowing details about the Orb of Destruction reveals one of the earliest and greatest mysteries of my story, namely how my glowy hand came to be. If you don’t know how that happened yet and don’t want it ruined, then turn away now. -Sam}

The Orb of Destruction is an elven relic that grants the wielder increased magical power and greater control over the Veil. What exactly it was and where it came from was a mystery, but Solas explained that the orb was one of several, each connected to one of the elven gods. Even though I didn’t remember it for some time, I first encountered the Orb of Destruction during the Conclave. I interrupted a ritual that Corypheus was performing with the orb, Divine Justinia V, and some mind-slaved Grey Warden mages. Most Holy managed to kick the artifact in my general direction, I picked it up out of instinct, and then there was a lot of green lightning, pain, and a catastrophic explosion. The ritual had been intended to give Cory the Anchor, a magical mark that allowed a person to open and close rifts in the Veil at will. Unfortunately for the darkspawn magister, I was given the glowy hand that he intended for himself. Cory managed to retrieve the Orb of Destruction after that, however, and continued to use it to cause trouble. The first time I actually met him, in Haven, he unsuccessfully attempted to use the orb to remove the Anchor. According to notes retrieved by the Inquisition, it also seemed like the orb was able to communicate with Cory, somehow, showing him ancient elven secrets like the location of the Temple of Mythal. The orb’s final acts were back at the Temple of Sacred Ashes, where Cory used it to reopen the Breach. Then I kicked his arse, took the orb from him, and used it to permanently seal said hole in the sky. This caused the orb to break, which notably upset Solas. To be honest, it hurt me as well because, despite it being dangerous in the wrong hands, yet another irreplaceable piece of my people’s heritage had been lost.
