Frostback Mountains

I return from a perilous place, to the warmth of your hollow. Embrace me, steady giant, monolith, lend me your heart.

The Frostback Mountains split the southern part of Thedas in two and have been the home of the Inquisition since its re-formation. Acting as the border between Orlais and Ferelden, the Frostbacks run from the Waking Sea south to beyond charted territory. Only one route, Gherlen’s Pass, is able to be crossed no matter the season, though there are other, more treacherous, paths through the peaks. The valley that Skyhold sits above is one example. Gherlen’s Pass is also home to the gates of Orzammar, which, until recently, was the only dwarven city thought to still exist. The mountains themselves are home to numerous types of dangerous wildlife, various tribes of Avvar and not much else, really. Orlesian and Ferelden villages do dot the foothills, but the interior is inhospitable to all but the hardiest of people. Despite this relative desolation, however, the mountains were the home of several very important locations during my inquisiting. The first was the Temple of Sacred Ashes, which was the site of the Conclave and the Breach that destroyed it. Next was the nearby village of Haven, where I recuperated from the creation of my glowy hand and the Inquisition was officially reborn. After that town was destroyed by Corypheus, we fled to an abandoned keep a short distance away named Skyhold, which still serves as the main base of the Inquisition. Finally, one of my most recent inquisitings took place in a quite pleasant part of the mountains, Frostback Basin in the south. Well, the area itself was pleasant, all of the fanatics hanging around who wanted to kill everything, slightly less so. Despite their inherent dangers, all parts of the Frostbacks are beautiful in their own way. No matter where the Inquisition ends up, the Frostback Mountains will always be an important place to us thanks to all of the significant events that took place there.
